About our Club!

The Boys & Girls Club of Santa Cruz County in Nogales, Arizona opened it's doors on May 24, 1993 as a result of a partnership with the City of Nogales, several years of planning and many, many hours of hard work and dedication by the founding Board members. The club was opened in order to offer the youth of Nogales, all the wonderful things that a Boys & Girls Club provides; A safe place to learn and grow; Ongoing relationships with caring, adult professionals; Life-enhancing programs and character development experiences; Hope and Opportunity.

Frank Martinez moved to Nogales from California back in 1979, and having come from a small town much like Nogales, he saw what a difference the presence of a Boys Club and other youth clubs made on himself and his community. The youth at the clubs participated in many city and community events through the Boys Club, and for many, the club became a home away from home that was a part of their life.

In contrast, Nogales was a city with no clubs and little activities for the youth of the community. Frank reminisced about the times he had in California at the Boys Club and he thought that it would be a good idea to do something like that here in Nogales. Not knowing how to go about starting something like this, Frank conveyed the idea to his brother-in-law, Norberto Camarillo. It wasn't long before they began calling all across the country to find out how, and they began passing out flyers they had made themselves. They spent many hours, some nights until midnight, inserting flyers under doors, on car windshields and everywhere they could think of to try and get the community involved. Fortunately, the response was positive and the idea became a reality.
